5.0 out of 5 stars Whether you love Marc or Jaques, this is for you..., 11 Feb 2001
By A Customer
One one hand this could stand alone as an historical document of songs that should never be allowed to fade into obscurity. On the other, the interpretations are artful and passionate, closer to Marc's Mamba years than anything else. Songs of sex, death and unfaithful love are familiar to Marc fans but this is definitely an opus with real music including live strings to back vocals from a man at the peak of his powers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for the fainthearted, 13 Aug 2000
By A Customer
It is little surprise that the Jacques Brel estate applauded Marc Almond on making one of the best albums of Brel covers in many years. Indeed, all English speaking Brel fans owe a debt of gratitude to Marc for bringing some of the great man's lesser known material to the fore.

The album starts with two of Brel's early acerbic songs, "The Devil" and "If You Need" which set the uncompromising tone well for the rest of the album. Of the material we already know from Scott Walker, Marc Almond takes on the standard "If You Go Away" letting the song stand on it's own rather than add further vocal hyperbolae. "Next" is perhaps the biggest shock, a cold and brutal version that even Brel himself might never have imagined, and "My Death" closes the album dreamily rather than dramatically.

Other highlights include "The Bulls" and the chilling, steely take on "I'm Coming". There are no dud tracks on this record, but best of all is probably "The Lockman". I had heard Brel do this song as "L'Eclusier", but not speaking French did not know just how powerful it could be. Almond, with bleak minimalist backing, has turned this into what many English speakers will regard as one of Brel's finest songs.

In short, I would thoroughly recommend this record to any Brel fan or indeed anyone who likes their music stark, uncloyed and uncompromising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaques well, 21 Sep 2006
By Mr. K. A. Grossmith (Ramsgate, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Contrary to other reviewers, I was absolutely taken with Marc Almonds' foray into what could have turned into disaster. It says much that he was not afraid to attempt another experiment into the avant garde. Previously, we have witnessed many transfigurations in his long career-whether with Marc and the Mambas, Raoul and the ruined or in his more familiar guises etc. Admittedly, this album is unlikely to sate many of those fans more attuned to the classic synth-pop of (say) 'tainted love' or the catchy melodrama of 'the days of pearly spencer'. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a distinct take on classic composition, then you should be very satisfied.
